Technology and Children

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Last week, I shared about how lack of sleep impacts children and our school community as a whole. This week, I want to encourage parents to talk about technology with their children. For many of us, technology has been a blessing and a curse: it provides access to information, learning, resources and entertainment.

Technology can affect a school community in a number of ways. While we teach about digital citizenship at school, I encourage you to monitor your child’s intake—how much time are they using tech and more importantly, what they are using. Helping them make healthy choices about technology can impact their mental health and their relationships.

For older elementary students who have cell phones, I encourage you to monitor their text messages to ensure they are using it responsibly. For more guidance, I highly recommend Spark and Stitch Institute from our very own state: Spark and Stitch Institute
