Proposed Budget Adjustments Could Impact Crestview

Proposed Budget Adjustments Could Impact Crestview Elementary
Posted on 01/06/2021

Dear Crestview Elementary School Families,

I am writing to share some news about the future of Crestview Elementary. Over the last four years, the cost of educational services in South Washington County Schools (SoWashCo) has continued to outpace the funding available to fully support our operations. The COVID-19 pandemic has created additional unexpected costs, declining enrollment districtwide and uncertainty for state aid.

As a result, the school board will review and discuss a list of proposed budget adjustments during its board workshop on Thursday, Jan. 7. I want to inform you that one of the recommendations includes the closure of Crestview Elementary at the end of this school year.

I know this is sad and disappointing news, especially for all the families and staff who have dedicated their time and support to Crestview Elementary over the years. Choosing to close a school is a tough decision and one I wish we could avoid. Crestview was selected, in part, because:

  • Its central location allows students to transition to other nearby neighborhood schools
  • The consolidation of an elementary school will allow for a more efficient use of staff
  • There would be no increase in school bus routes or transportation costs
  • The closure would save around $1 million
  • The building may be repurposed for another need identified through the district’s long-range facility planning process that was put on hold in March 2020

At this time, the closure of Crestview Elementary is a recommendation for the school board that they will review during the board workshop on Thursday, Jan. 7. The board is expected to take action on all budget adjustment items during the regular school board meeting on Thursday, Jan, 21.

If the proposal to close Crestview Elementary is approved, we will create a transition team that includes parents, staff and community members. The potential closure of Crestview would take place at the end of this school year. Adjustments to the school boundaries, that define where a student would attend school in the fall, would be shared once the decision is made.

We understand that this information comes at a difficult time and apologize that it has to be done in a letter format. If you would like to provide input, you may complete this form and select “Budget” as the topic. We will share your messages with the school board. Thank you for understanding as we work through these difficult budget decisions.

Sincerely,

Julie Nielsen
Superintendent
